HISTORY

1956 - 1963    Revd B.L.E. Sigamoney, the rector of St Anthony's in Vrededorp, initiated and began Anglican services in Lenasia. The first services were held at Lenasia High School (which was situated where Signet Terrace Shopping Centre now stands).

1963 - 1967    Different priests took care of the church in the interim.

1967 - 1972    St Alban's church in Malay camp, near Fordsburg became the mother church of Many churches in Johannesburg. This included Christ the Saviour, Lenasia, which was grouped with St Philips, Kliptown and St. Mary Magdalene, Protea.
At this time Revd Peter Hipkins took pastoral responsibility for the Anglican congregation of Lenasia. Under his leadership the present church building was erected on the comer of Rose Avenue and Petrea Street and was named Christ the Saviour.
In March 1969 the church was consecrated. Some highlights during the Fr Hipkins time include a "Rock Mass" and a visit by Revd Beyers Naude.

1972 - 1973    Revd Erson gave pasloral care to the church.

1973 - 1982    Revd Dennis Jacobs was appointed as incumbent of the Parish.

I982 - 1987     Revd Michael Coopen was appointed as Rector. Some of the highlights of his time include the Parish's first Debs ball and a visit by Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

1988 - 1994     Revd Ron Daniels was appointed as Rector of the parish.

1994 - 1996     Revd George van der Merwe, followed by Revd Gill Lee assisted with the pastoral care of the congregation.

1996 - 2005     Revd Arun John arrived from the Church of North Indian and was appointed as Rector of the Parish. Some highlights of his ministry include: Interfaith Dialogue and the vision of Sadbhavana Griha (a community centre).

2005-2007     Reuben Soobrayan arrived from Durban and was appointed as lay-minister responsible for the Pastoral Care of the Congregation. He was assisted by Revd Moeketsi Tshikita (a Methodist Minister) under the supervision of Ven. Joan Hepburn (Rector and Archdeacon).
Reuben was ordained Deacon in December 2006 and Priest in November 2007.  At his ordination to the priesthood his name was changed to Kumeran.  Revd Kumeran Soobrayan is presently serving his curacy as priest of the Parish with Ven Joan Hepburn as Acting Rector.
