St. Mark, Regent Hill

The Church is right on the boundary of the suburbs of  Regents Park and The Hill and also serves Roseacre, South Hills and Elands Park.  It is  known as the parish of Regent Hill.  

The congregation of St. Mark meet in one of the Diocese’s more attractive places of worship where services take place every Sunday. 

Community service includes support for local poorer families through donations by parish memebers.    Parish members and the clergy also care for local residential retirement homes.   Bible studies, Prayer meetings and Home Cell's take place every week where members learn, practice and grow their faith.

        St. Mark's - Regent Hill,        The Early Years

• City Deep Gold Mine gave land to the Diocese of Johannesburg to use for a church.
• After many years St. Mary's Rosettenville built a house on the land for a curate, Fr. Fraser Alexander.
• Fr. Alexander started what was to become St. Mark's by holding services in the house.  When more space was needed they moved to The Church of the Nazarene in Bob St. Regent's Park; then to the Scout Hall.
• Fr. Alexander erected a tent on the present church site and called on parishioners to pray there for the building of the church.
• Fr. Alexander moved away, but his vision survived, and in 1959 the parish of St. Mark's Regent's Hill was born.  The foundation stone of the church building was laid in 1961.
• Through the years there have been several priests-in-charge of the parish.
• The building was finally fully paid and dedicated by Bishop Timothy Bavin in 1981.
• In 1989 Revd Klaus Kühne was appointed as our first rector.
