Education

Having begun with one diocesan school in 1990, the diocese now has three.  In each case the church is involved in school governance, support of teachers, and a range of other support interventions.

 History

St Martin’s School traces its origins back to the foundation of St Agnes School for the training of domestic helpers in 1908. A few years later in 1911, St Peter’s Priory and College were added, offering a boarding-based high school education to the young men who came from the length and breadth of South Africa. It soon became known as the “Black Eton” where academic achievements were espoused. The list of the early alumni is impressive and many of our former students hold key positions in government and in large international corporations.
The apartheid policies of the National Party regime put pressure on the school and it was closed in 1956. However, the Anglican Church ensured that education continued in this attractive part of southern Johannesburg. The buildings, designed by the famous architectural firm of H Baker & F Fleming, were reopened for business in 1958 - St Martin’s School was born.

The School will Celebrate its 50th Anniversary this year (2008) as St. Martin's School.

  • Lesedi la Kreste Anglican Primary School

Lesedi la Kreste Anglican Primary School at Orange Farm has 1320 learners registered in a school run in partnership with government, who pay staff salaries in a school founded by the church for this new housing area established in 1990 for the poorer community.  About a quarter of the families represented at Lesedi la Kreste are affected by HIV and AIDS.

Since late 2005 we have appointed Mrs. Kentse Mangoenyane as a fulltime child and family counsellor at Lesedi because of the high incidence of children affected by HIV and AIDS in the school and the number of affected households nearby.

The school will also be housing the Archdeaconry "Bambanani HIV and AIDS Centre" of Klip River.

Mission, Ministry and Witness of the Anglican Church of Southern Africa and some of the Challenges of the Context in which we live

STATEMENT OF THE SYNOD OF BISHOPS A regular meeting of the Synod of Bishops of the Anglican Church of Southern Africa in Gauteng this week reviewed the ongoing mission, ministry and witness of the Church and some of the challenges of the context in which we live. We voiced our renewed concern at the extreme poverty suffered by many in southern Africa, and at the wide gap between those who have excessive wealth and those who are poor. We remain deeply concerned at the prevalence of malaria and HIV and Aids, and we acknowledge anew the brokenness of the nations which we represent. We pledged to continue modelling values in our societies which build integrity, love, forgiveness, peace and reconciliation.
