Donkey Drive
Refers to Parish:
Walkerville, Parish of St. Francis
Most people in the Diocese will by now have heard of (and hopefully prayed for) the Donkey Drive from Walkerville to Cape Town. On 25th of July this year the Reverends Neil Scott and Huddleston Thonga set off on this epic journey (1,600kms over 3 months!) from St Francis Anglican Church in Walkerville. They left with great rejoicing, a little trepidation, and the good wishes the good wishes of many friends from all over the Diocese of Christ the King, who gathered to pray for them and their families, and to wish them “God speed”.
Present at the send-off were our Bishop, and the Mayor of Midvaal Municipality who handed the travellers a bunch of letters to the Mayors of the various towns through which they will pass en route to Cape Town. Since it is impossible (and illegal?!) to use national roads, most of the trip follows gravel roads through the Western Free State, and the Northern and Western Cape. Weekends are being spent resting donkeys and drivers, and connecting up with Christian communities in the towns through which they pass. In all, six donkeys are being used in teams of two each, so that the animals work for one day and then rest for two. The donkeys, all owned by Neil Scott himself, rejoice in the names of Bongani, Bongile, Blessed, Benedict, Peter and John.
At the time of writing, the team is somewhere between Douglas and Prieska in the Diocese of Kimberley and Kuruman . From there, the journey will take them through Carnarvon, Fraserburg, Sutherland, Ceres and Paarl (check your maps to see where some of these places are), arriving at St George’s Cathedral in Cape Town on the 7th November.

Apart from Father Huddlestone, Neil has at various stages had as his travelling companions Fathers Gijimane Radebe and Michael Masisi. They have had the privilege of speaking at the Cathedrals in Potchefstroom and Kimberley, as well as various smaller communities along the way, where they have also been handing out some of the 1,200 bibles donated for this purpose.
The aims of the undertaking, as identified in a mission statement adopted in 2007 are to:
¨ Witness to the unity that Christians of different races have in Christ;
¨ Raise funds for mission work in the Diocese of Christ the King;
¨ Engage with Christian communities of all denominations en route from JHB to CT;
¨ Identify with and witness to the Lord Jesus Christ, who entered Jerusalem riding on a donkey.
