DEFINING MY OWN FUTURE

DEFINING MY OWN FUTURE” This was the theme of the day that was aimed at encouraging young people to make healthy decisions that will ensure that they do not jeopardize their future.

It sought to portray young people as active agents of their own future and not as victims of circumstances.

The youth of the Diocese of Christ the King commemorated June 16 differently this year. This was probably brought by the appointment of new diocesan Siyafundisa field workers, Jeanette Mofokeng and Joseph Mokhosi who are so vigorous.

Young people from all walks of the diocese gathered at the Church of  the Ascension in Sebokeng looking stunning in their respective school uniforms to experience the remarkable day in the history of South Africa . The main reasons for this gathering was to honour young people who made a huge contribution towards the Siyafundisa programme and to divulge the talent that they have. We had more people than we expected. This huge turnout was brilliant, but it meant that there was a food shortage which did not discourage the attendees because they had lots of fun.

The day was commenced with the Holy Eucharist that was conducted by the Archdeaconry Youth Chaplain Revd Jerry Boloang. He introduced the diocesan HIV and AIDS Co-ordinator Ms Nandi Tshaka. It was during this service where 88 peer educators and 16 supervisors were given certificates of appreciation. Parishes were also expected to show their talent in the drama contest under the theme “sex is worth waiting for”. Judges had a tough decision to make as all these young people portrayed exclusive renditions. Trophies for the best performances went to the Church of the Resurrection, Sebokeng which obtained the third position. St John’s-Boipatong acquired second position and Holy Innocents, Fine Town left the audience rolling on the floor laughing with their first class performance.

This event was a successful marketing strategy for Siyafundisa as there were many more young people who have shown interest in becoming peer educators in the next programme rollout.
